Welcome to the Federal Application Page!
Federal Application
There are a number of different formats you may encounter when doing a federal application, depending upon the hiring agency. Each federal application has its own restrictions and requirements. A few of the more popular formats are explained further here. The most common formats for a federal applicaiton are AVUE Digital format, USAJobs Resumix format, Army CPOL Resumix format, Navy CHART format, and the QuickHire format. There are others but we find these to be the most common. Each one is unique and has its own specific requiements.
AVUE DIGITAL FORMAT
- You must register with AVUE at www.avuecentral.com.
- The input format is going to be in a plain layout without caps, italics, or any design characteristics like you might see with a regular resume.
- Pay strict attention to character counts in each section. MS Word may not be completely accurate in the character count. INCLUDE SPACES.
- Each job history segment allows for 4,000 characters and spaces and so does the additional information area where you have your summary, awards, licenses, and more. You must be tight and clean in your writing to meet the character requirements.
Beware of system timeouts. If you enter your information "live" on screen, you could lose it. It's much more efficient to have all of your information prepared in such as way that you can simply copy and paste the relevant sections as needed. That's how we prepare your materials - with copy and paste simplicity.
The federal application input format for AVUE is very "plain Jane" with no style features permitted as you might see on a regular resume. There are ways to effectively highlight important information and when you let us prepare your Resumix, everything will be formatted with highlights and proper format in mind.
USAJobs FORMAT
- Register an account with www.usajobs.gov to get started.
- The input format is going to be in a plain layout without caps, italics, or any design characteristics like you might see with a regular resume.
- Pay strict attention to character counts in each section. MS Word may not be completely accurate in the character count. INCLUDE SPACES in the count..
- Each job history segment allows for 3,000 characters and spaces and that requires a very tightly written style - not a lot of room to work with here.
- Each section on relevant coursework, training, and certifications allows just 2,000 total characters.
- The section for job related training allows for 5,000 characters as does the section on professional publications.
- The additional information section, where you get to tell about your professional summary, awards, areas of expertise, and more allows for a whopping 20,000 characters. Plenty of room to blow your own horn here.
Beware of system timeouts when inputting your federal application. If you enter your information "live" on screen, you could lose it. It's much more efficient to have all of your information prepared in such as way that you can simply copy and paste the relevant sections as needed. That's how we prepare your materials - with copy and paste simplicity.
The input format for USAJOBS allows no style features permitted as you might see on a regular resume. There are ways to effectively highlight important information and when you let us prepare your Resumix, everything will be formatted with highlights and proper format in mind.
As you can see, especially if you've read about other federal formats, each one has unique size restrictions and formatting restrictions. It's not a simple process to copy and paste from one to another - your data simply might not fit.
ARMY CPOL FORMAT
- List of allowable characters in the Army CPOL format is: [A-Z],[a-z],[0-9],[comma],~!@#$%^&*()-_+={[}]|\<>?/.`
- Do NOT use " or -- or ... punctuation. MS Word changes them to characters the Army CPOL will not recognize.
- Pay strict attention to character counts in each section. MS Word may not be completely accurate in the character count. INCLUDE SPACES.
- The work experience section allows 12,000 total characters and spaces; the education section allows 2,000.
- The additional information (where you get to put your summary and areas of expertise) allows for 6,000 total characters. Pay attention!
It is not recommended to use the CPOL worksheet option when inputting data. While it might make sense, it's actually more difficult. It's much more efficient to have all of your information prepared in such as way that you can simply copy and paste the relevant sections as needed. That's how we prepare your materials - with copy and paste simplicity. It makes submitting your federal application that much easier.
The input format for Army CPOL is very "plain Jane" with no style features permitted as you might see on a regular resume. There are ways to effectively highlight important information and when you let us prepare your Resumix, everything will be formatted with highlights and proper format in mind.
NAVY CHART FORMAT
- Register an account with https://chart.donhr.navy.mil/ to get started.
- Unlike other formats, Navy CHART leads off with education background, then goes into work history.
- The input format is going to be in a plain layout without caps, italics, or any design characteristics like you might see with a regular resume.
- Pay strict attention to character counts in each section. MS Word may not be completely accurate in the character count. INCLUDE SPACES in the count..
- Each job history segment allows for 7,500 characters and spaces which is more generous than other formats - more than double USAJOBS.
- Professional training section gives you 5,000 total characters. The section for professional licenses and certificates gives just 1,500 characters.
- The additional information section, where you get to tell about your professional summary, awards, areas of expertise, and more allows for 7,000 characters which may require some heavy editing and is just 1/3 the size of USAJOBS.
Beware of system timeouts. It's much more efficient to have all of your information prepared in such as way that you can simply copy and paste the relevant sections as needed. That's how we prepare your materials - with copy and paste simplicity.
The federal application input format for Navy CHART allows no style features permitted as you might see on a regular resume. There are ways to effectively highlight important information and when you let us prepare your CHART Resumix, everything will be formatted with highlights and proper format in mind.
Navy CHART is a great example of a federal input format that's just very different from the others - making it tough to share information from one system to another.
QUICKHIRE FORMAT
- QuickHire format is used by DOT, GSA, TSA and other agencies.
- Like Navy CHARTS, QuickHire leads off with education background, then goes into work history.
- The input format is going to be in a plain layout without caps, italics, or any design characteristics like you might see with a regular resume.
- Pay strict attention to character counts in each section. MS Word may not be completely accurate in the character count. INCLUDE SPACES in the count..
- There are no character count restrictions per QuickHire sections - instead the entire document has a size limitation of 16,000 characters. That's not a lot of room to work with, especially compared to other federal formats.
- As in other federal formats, this is a plain style entry with no visual or style features.
Beware of system timeouts. It's much more efficient to have your information prepared in such as way that you can simply copy and paste the relevant sections as needed. That's how we prepare your federal application materials - with copy and paste simplicity.
The input format for QuickHire allows no style features permitted as you might see on a regular resume. There are ways to effectively highlight important information and when you let us prepare your QuickHire Resumix, everything will be formatted with highlights and proper format in mind.
QuickHire is unique, even for a federal input format and it has a severe size limitation, making data here almost useless for transfer to another format.
